desert and sum revisited

sum 2

It was interesting doing this commission. These two 12" x 12" panels are based on earlier, much larger paintings from a few years back. Revisiting this work made me very aware of the metamorphosis of my style and technique since then, and taught me that working small takes almost as much time as working large. And painting in acrylic? Brutal. I never knew it was so hard when I was doing it! :) Now I want to go back and create more Primal Landscapes. Ah, the circle of art life.

Would love to see more "Primal Landscapes"! Working in acrylic is brutal now, huh? Guess I should stay away from oils so I can keep using acrylics! ;) Seriously, your ability and talent with both mediums is just wonderful.

I just love this painting style of yours - It just calls to me. Beautiful! ... Regarding oils, I am afraid to play around with them, as I know that I would get sucked into the ease of blending and might never go back to acrylics. But I have found a voice that I quite like in my acrylics and know I still have a lot to learn here. And I'm rather impatient, so right now they suit me well. Keep up the lovely work!

I so love your primal landscapes. Experiment with them in oils next, include some hawks and saw whet owls. I bet they'd be spectacular and so fun to paint.

Funny how much artists like this series (including me!) but I sort of abandoned it when there was very little commercial interest in it. Now I'm thinking I need to return to it (to hell with the vendors!) and, like Ellen said, somehow make it work in oil. If I do that, though, it'll require a lot of planning and I'll have to do it assembly-line style, like some artists I know, and that really rubs me the wrong way creatively. Guess I need to think outside my own self-imposed box.

Oh -- and thanks for the great feedback. Angela and Lisa -- you both understand acrylic so well that I don't know if you'd have the same reaction as me to oil paint. The medium that I simply can't use AT ALL is watercolour, so to each his own and hallelujah for that!
