floating free

I've wasted an obscene amount of time on Facebook while doing this painting. It was going badly so I was constantly seeking distraction. With my desk right behind me when I'm at the easel it's too much temptation! This never happens when work is going well (she said with complete conviction...). Anyway, I think I need to put away my acrylic paints for awhile. Spending 2010 becoming acquainted with oil paint has spoiled my enjoyment of my previous medium-of-choice.

I hope the result doesn't show my labours too obviously. It's a bit of an experimental one-off: a simple 24" x 24" acrylic painting with stencilled pine branches and small dragonflies to complement the three larger dragonflies. The leaves are cut from magazines and were a bit of a trial. I had to paint over a few but I left my secret subversive ones unpainted. Can you see James Dean, a woman's bare bum and a cross section of a man's brain? Excellent. Me neither.

And me neither. I see beautiful work, instead.
Loved your post. You made me laugh :D

Thank you my friend. I have therefore succeeded! :)

If I squint I can, perhaps, see "Derriere de la Femme" in abstracted form...
Otherwise? I see a classic Pratt. The sort of work I'd hang on my wall ;-)
And on the switch from acrylic to oil (or similar), yes, many struggle with that. It is only now, many years later, that I realise why my life was so difficult as my artist-man shifted gears.

well let me see a bigger image of it :)
interesting, this does have a distracted feel to it...and now that you shared why it does it makes sense. i still like it. when i look at this i feel like those dragonflies were once part of the background and they have somehow come loose like cut paper and are free. very 'fall' ...busy...interesting work

I love how graphic and abstract this is. The colours are so calming, but pop with the underpainting there. Lovely!

Dragonfly wings lend themselves to your style really well. I'm a little bummed (harhar) that I can't see the subversive elements at all. I really like this, walking in the woods around pines and ponds last week, I'm surprised how many dragonflies were still buzzing around. This reminds me of that walk, so I especially like it:)

our dragonflies have gone for the year, so this is especially cheering right now. They buzzed around here like helicopters all summer long, huge, intrusive, busily on the hunt.

can't find a single image you noted, so yep, she'd all painted over! Love the calming colors contrasting with the busy dragonflies.

Di: Thanks. Switching gears has been rewarding but shifting into reverse -- not so easy.

Paula: I love your cut paper interpretation. Very appropriate!

Lisa: I had meant the colours to be more monochromaatic but the painting dictated the direction. As usual! Thanks.

Ellen: You can see the subversive elements up close and personal tomorrow.

Hayden: I saw a hummingbird yesterday! It was like a last gasp of summer as winter comes rolling in.

yup I see a beautiful painting :) love the colors as well and dragon flies. I used to be (ok kind of still em) terrified of them when I was little, here I like them very much :)
