the ice floe that is art

As a direct result of the orange slice of this highly-scientific pie chart (found here) I discovered this excellent post. I might not have found it if I hadn't fuelled my aimless surfing with a nutrition-free breakfast after a good night's sleep.

Seriously, I think that bridging the gaping canyon between the practitioners of the kind of art that tends to encourage artspeak and the unbelievers who make up The Rest of the World is valuable for both sides of the divide. The dialogue that follows the post is just as good.

They left out small appliance repair. I can fix the same broken toaster pretty much indefinitely when I have work to do.

20 effin' minutes to write my intelligent, thought provoking, freakin brilliant comment to this post! Yes, I'm claiming it was and it can't be proven otherwise now because #4*&$@ blogger gave me an error message when I clicked on Post Comment!!!!! It's lost!
GRRRRR. Anyhoo, like the graph, i'm stealing it.

Helen and Ellen: my middle name and the name that was originally misread three generations back and was therefore *supposed* to be my middle name. But I digress. I'm just pleased that anyone made the effort to check out both the divisions of the pie graph and the article. I mostly get picture readers and it's my own fault. I'm as guilty as the next guy of laziness online. And as for comment loss, there's something in the water because Blogger has screwed me over lately, too. I'm detecting all sorts of messages (mostly bugs in the system) lately telling me to return to the meatworld and leave this one behind. As if.

Why does 'Helen' have one L and 'Ellen' have two??? They sound the same....

Just askin'...

I am very good at wasting time too, but I don't have art on the stove in slow-cook mode. So I don't think I count in this situation. But hey! You still get stuff accomplished!!!

I hear you dear one, I hear you! I could use a 4'x6' one of these! :)

Ponita: I think it's pretty much a given for any creative process. For procrastinators/percolators that is!

Indigene: You know what -- it would be so easy to make a 4' x 6' copy and hang it up. I might just do that!

Love the pie chart...

At least the Inspiration wafer is right next to the Work wafer. Mine are on opposite sides of the pie, opposite sides of the house, and with a big Distraction blob in the middle.

"random internet surfing" - or in my case blog surfing or blurfing - allowed me to find your blog where you have given credence to my mind-numbing activity when I should be on my way to work. Thank you!
ps - I'll be back to check out your paintings - very interesting.

Yay! I can comment again! For some reason, I couldn't comment on this blog for a number of days; the field simply didn't appear.

In any case, thank you for linking to the HH piece, Andrea! There are no easy answers, unfortunately. The Plagens piece that you pointed me to was terrific.

All the very best,
Christopher
